Funded by the County of Santa Cruz Measure Q – Safe Drinking Water, Clean Beaches, Wildfire Risk Reduction and Wildlife Protection Act
The program will prioritize low-income homeowners in high wildfire-risk areas within Santa Cruz County who face the greatest barriers to completing wildfire mitigation work, including:
Seniors
People with disabilities
Residents with other access and functional needs
Think you might be a good fit? We'd love to hear from you. Our services are free, and there's no cost or obligation to find out if you qualify.
Through Resilience-Ready Santa Cruz, SCCLTRG will provide free Zone 0 wildfire mitigation services to households in Santa Cruz County’s Wildland-Urban Interface.
Project crews will work directly with participating households to create and maintain a safer, more ember-resistant area within the first five feet of the home. This work may include removing dry leaves, pine needles, branches, dead plants, woody mulch, combustible groundcover, and other flammable materials that can collect against foundations, beneath decks, along fences, or near exterior walls. Crews may also trim or remove vegetation that touches the structure, clear debris from areas where wind-blown embers are likely to accumulate, and address other immediate ignition hazards around the home.
California’s AB 3074 establishes a new wildfire safety standard known as Zone 0: the first five feet surrounding a home or other structure must be maintained as an ember-resistant area.
This space is especially important because wind-driven embers can collect near walls, decks, fences, vegetation, and other combustible materials, creating a pathway for wildfire to ignite a home.
For many Santa Cruz County residents, meeting this new requirement will not be easy. Seniors, people with disabilities, and low-income households may be unable to complete the physical work themselves or afford professional vegetation removal and debris hauling. We believe wildfire resilience should not depend on a household’s income, age, or physical ability.
